The O2 Academy Bournemouth is a Grade II listed building in Boscombe. It first opened in 1895 and was famed for its circus acts. There is a local legend that a tunnel running from the theatre to King’s Park was used to transport lions, tigers and polar bears to the theatre. In 1899 it became the Boscombe Grand Theatre, and in 1902 a music hall called the Boscombe Hippodrome.
By the 1960s it was a music venue called Starkers, and in 1982 re-invented itself yet again as the Academy nightclub, which featured the first karaoke bar in the UK. From 1997 until 2009 the venue was called the Opera House nightclub.
A three million-pound refurbishment between November 2006 and June 2007 saw the venue restored to its former glory, replacing some of the original features, and upgrading the facilities. In 2009 it became the O2 Academy Bournemouth and now hosts a wide range of world-class live music.
